A new collaborative work featuring Kyoto-based musician AKIRA∞IKEDA has been added to the 2020 version of the HELIO COMPASS music series—a representation of the one-year movement of the entire solar system. Since the year 2020 has seen unprecedented times because of COVID-19, we have had to overcome many limitations. In fact, the home-isolation period offered us some time to focus on this project. Thanks to this, we have perfected this brand-new harmony of “time and space music.”
The solar system has many impressive events in 2020. The last transit of Venus across the solar disk took place in 2012, with inferior conjunctions of Venus and Earth occurring five times in those past eight years. In June 2020, when the eight-year cycle of Venus ended, a simplistic five-pointed star, called Venus Pentagram, was formed. By connecting each point in which Venus makes the closest approach to Earth, you can create this five-pointed star. Another great conjunction of gas giants Jupiter and Saturn will occur on November 3, 2020.
Opening with the sound heralding the Vernal Equinox (which fell on March 20th in Japan), this music features an assortment of sounds every few seconds. Each and every sound perfectly coincides with this year’s astronomical events, such as the equinoxes and solstices, the rest of the 24 seasonal divisions, the moon phases, as well as planetary alignments. The year-long (365-day) movement of the solar system can be expressed in approximately 50 minutes. It means three hours are compressed into one second and 24 hours into eight seconds. This representation of one Earth year using sounds is an unconventional attempt to convey the concept of extensive time and space that resides in music.
With his distinctive style of music and creativity, AKIRA∞IKEDA has composed this comforting and smooth ambient music piece. Daily activities on Earth are expressed with the sounds of bells and flowing water, and the movement of the moon with harmonious sounds of frequencies of 528 hertz and 4096 hertz. The moment when Venus as the evening star turns into the morning star, is celebrated with the sound of piano and hang drum. Every time you enjoy this music, you will feel the journey of planet Earth through this year’s time and space.
At the precise moment of the Vernal Equinox, when the Sun is exactly above the equator, all the shadows on Earth disappear. From the point of the Vernal Equinox, Earth begins another year of journey. We would love to introduce this musical piece, with the hope that every person living in this ever-changing time and space will be guided to the next starting point at zero degrees.
